The theme for this past month as been friendship: discovering new friends, and also enjoying the “old” friendships. ?Relationship building is key to living in a new culture, to adjusting well and being able to “stick it out” in the hard times. ?As we have lived here in Australia, and in Barunga specifically, the friendships we are building are a blessing.

Since we are living in Barunga, sometimes it’s hard to separate life from work, and work from life. ?I find myself saying, “How can we best show people we care about them?” ?”Am I just a book salesman?” ?Where is my heart?

The answer may not be surprising for yumob, (y’all in Kriol) and it wasn’t an epiphany for me much either. ?I was simply reminded in a big way where my heart lies: with the people. ?There is no greater joy for me than to sit with folks and simply get to know them. ?I like learning from them, and if I can help them/teach them, I enjoy that as well. ?I enjoy enabling people to do what the Lord is calling them to do; and I really get excited when I am able to watch them apply it to their lives!

There are many different relationships/friendships built here. ?Some relationships have been everyday seeing the people here in Barunga, whereas some are “workshop” relationships. ?If we go to a neighbouring community and meet folks there, but we don’t see them too often. ?Anyway, there are many different friendships built in different contexts.

I met William and Marjorie while at the Katherine Christian Convention(KCC) last weekend. ?They were two of the original translators for the Kriol Baibul. ?Something I really appreciated about William was his patience in helping me with Kriol, and his ability to laugh at the little things. ?He speaks the Roper River Kriol, which is a “heavier” Kriol than the one spoken in Barunga. ?When I first met him, we were talking, and I used a phrase I learned while in a different community, and he laughed, and corrected me. ?He would say, “Lagijat na.” ?”It’s like that.” ?But I had learned at the other community they shorten it to, “Lat na.” ?So every time he saw me, he’d say, “Lat na!” ?and then laugh. ?Of course I’d say it back to him, and we’d both chuckle. ?His heart to see God’s Word in Kriol encouraged and inspired me in the work God has given us here.

Guy is a Christian man living in Barunga. ?I have been able to sit with him at his house once, as well as see him on several occasions in the community and chat. ?He is a blessing to me, and has given me the okay to come and visit him any time. ?He stays very busy with work, and family as well. ?He is a hard worker, so he’s depended on by many people. ?Please pray for me to be a blessing to Guy. ?His wife, Beverly was also a member of the Kriol Baibul translation team.

Building relationships is THE ONLY WAY in indigenous society. ?Relationships are everything. ?There have been times when I’ve just been baffled by what strong ties our indigenous friends have to each other, and the responsibilities/obligations which come from those relationships. ?When a relative (whether through blood or simply by skin name) asks for something, they give it. ?Giving gifts is a common way to start and also continue a relationship.

For example, when we first arrived in Australia, and were at the Yangbala Kemp (Youth Camp), ?there were a TON of flies! ?It seemed there was no possible way to get away from them. ?And they weren’t polite, traditional “American” flies who just buzzed around, and landed on the table to be swatted. ?These were the “fly-in-your-eyes, mouth, ears…” type of fly. I noticed our indigenous sister with a fly-net hat. ?I said, “Cool hat!” ?She took it off and said, “It’s yours.” ?I was a little embarrassed, because I didn’t mean to take it from her, but she explained, “You are my brother in Christ. ?I want to give you this hat. ?It’s okay.” ?I’m still learning, but it seems to me that gift giving and receiving is a normal part of life. ?It doesn’t have to be anything large. ?It could simply be tea or milk or sugar, but a gift shows a relationship.

As we continue to live here, and deepen our relationships with folks, please pray for wisdom and discernment in how to help them in the most important relationship of all: with Jesus Christ.

Last month we wrote about the many businesses in North Carolina that were not carrying workers’ compensation insurance despite the state’s law requiring that they do so. Companies throughout the state have been getting away without workers’ compensation insurance to the detriment of their employees, because the state did not take any action to stop the practice. According to an article published in the News & Observer, the number of businesses doing so was in the tens of thousands.

In the past few weeks the situation has apparently changed a bit. Earlier this month, many owners of businesses found themselves at the state Industrial Commission’s headquarters facing officials from the commission. The officials were seeking payment on workers’ compensation opinions previously rendered in favor of workers who were injured on the job.

A total of 50 cases were addressed in commissions’ first round through old claims. It is expected that similar hearings will continue over the course of the next few months. At least one of the claims the deputy commissioner was seeking to collect on was six years old.

The goal of the commissions’ action is to recover at least some of the money owed to injured workers and hopefully get a plan in place to provide the remaining amount. In an effort to obtain payments owed, the officials fell back on the possibility that business owners who failed to comply could potentially be thrown in jail.

How well the state Industrial Commission’s actions will work remains to be seen. We will provide relevant updates as they become available.

Town music service will run ?hub? for Greater Manchester

THE town?s music service has been chosen to run a new ?music education hub? across Greater Manchester.

Bolton Council?s Music Service, which provides music education in schools, was awarded the role by Arts Council England.

The Greater Manchester Music Education Hub will create future music stars in the region.

The hub involves all the Greater Manchester boroughs, apart from Manchester itself, which will continue to operate on its own service.

Cllr Nick Peel said: ?Bolton Music Service has made a massive impact on the lives of many children and young people and richly deserves the award of Hub status.

?Music gives children a positive focus and helps build their skills and self-esteem.

?Working together we will now be able to create greater opportunities for young people across the region.?

The new hub ? which will include Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan music services ? will work closely with the Manchester service and a wide range of other music organisations.

The aim of the new organisation is to ensure that every child in the region, whatever their background, has access to instruments and music lessons.

It will provide schools with support on teaching music as well as help in setting up and running bands, choirs and orchestras.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Brian McNamee testified that Roger Clemens’ lawyers pushed him from reluctant turncoat to angry accuser when they allowed details of McNamee’s oldest son’s illness to be revealed during a nationally televised news conference.

“I was furious,” McNamee told the jury in Clemens’ perjury trial Tuesday. As soon as he could, McNamee said, he went to his house and retrieved the medical waste he had collected from injecting Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee turned the materials over to his lawyers, who in turn gave the materials to federal law enforcement officials. It’s now the physical evidence prosecutors are using to try to prove Clemens lied to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids and human growth hormone.

The prosecution is expected to show that the evidence contains Clemens’ DNA. The defense has called the evidence “garbage” and is expected to claim it is tainted.

McNamee claimed that he kept the evidence a secret ? even when he was telling investigators about injections he gave to Clemens ? in an attempt to minimize the impact on the seven-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher.

“I didn’t want to hurt the guy,” McNamee said. “I knew that would hurt Roger even more.”

But in a televised 2008 news conference, when Clemens’ lawyers played a taped phone call between the two men that contained references to medical details about McNamee’s oldest son, who was suffering from diabetes, McNamee turned against his friend and client.

“My son was 11 years old at the time,” he said, as Clemens stared from across the room. “It’s beyond inhuman to do that to a kid.”

McNamee said he turned over the evidence against Clemens “because of what he did to my son.”

McNamee, Clemens’ longtime strength coach, testified Tuesday for a second day, pushing his running total to roughly 10 hours on the stand, including the first few moments of what portends to be a grueling cross-examination that will continue Wednesday.

The broad outline was familiar from McNamee’s previous statements: He said he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone in 2000 and with steroids in 2001, and he gave Debbie Clemens a shot of HGH in 2003. That was in addition to the testimony he gave Monday, when he spoke of a series of steroids injections he said he gave Clemens in 1998, when he was pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays.

He went on to describe his marital problems, money problems and the legal mess that came about when he got entangled in the federal drugs-in-sports investigation that led him to become a reluctant but cooperating witness against one of the most successful baseball players of all time.

“It destroyed me. It killed me. … I put myself in a situation where I had to do this,” McNamee said. “I had to tell the truth.”

Some details were new and fascinating, especially hearing them spoken out loud in a courtroom with Clemens sitting a few feet away. At one dramatic point, the adversaries were actually both standing, when McNamee rose from the witness stand and identified Clemens with an outstretched left arm: “He’s right there with the brown tie.” Clemens looked straight at McNamee, stone-faced and silent.

When McNamee left the courtroom so the parties could discuss an issue out of earshot of him and the jury, Clemens turned and glared at his former coach all the way to the door ? a fierce stare he used to deliver from a major league pitcher’s mound.

“You’re going to go down! You’re going to go down! You’re going to go down!” Brian McNamee said his wife, Eileen, told him in the “middle of a battle royale” argument.

McNamee said he thought “she might be right,” so he kept the needle, swab and cotton ball from a steroids injection he said took place in Clemens’ New York City apartment in 2001. He said he put the items in a beer can that he salvaged from the recycling bin in Clemens’ kitchen ? a means of protecting the used needle from accidently stabbing himself ? and brought the can home. It was put in a FedEx box and kept in the house, an effort to “keep the home front nice and smooth,” McNamee said.

Years later, McNamee and his wife began divorce proceedings, which are ongoing.

In his 2008 congressional deposition, McNamee said he also kept the leftover waste from the injection because he distrusted Clemens “to a degree.” He didn’t mention that reason on the stand Tuesday.

The defense is expected to attack McNamee’s integrity and motives, and Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin offered a brief taste during 10 minutes of cross-examination before the trial recessed for the day. Hardin suggested that McNamee purposefully wore a tie with a logo to a grand jury appearance in 2010 to advertise a company for financial gain. McNamee said he has no financial interest in the company and that he wore the tie because his other one was wrinkled.

The trial is in its fifth week, and the tedium cost the proceedings another member of the jury Tuesday. Juror No. 1, a supermarket cashier, became the second member of the panel to be dismissed for sleeping. Her departure leaves 14 jurors, including two alternates.

Back in 1980 returning from a hunting trip with some childhood friends, we eyed the historic Young?s High Bridge, a railroad bridge that towered over US 62 between Anderson County and Woodford County line. My buddy challenged the other two of us to join him in climbing up and walking out onto that bridge.

Like most teenagers, being young, dumb and feeling bullet proof, we took the challenge. Once at the top I remember having second thoughts gazing 1659 feet across the river to the other side of the bridge with no railing or walkway on either side of the track. Just railroad ties with 2-foot gaps where I could see all the way through to the river 283 feet below. Nevertheless, we all did it and walked away with our very own ?Stand by Me? moment.

In my line of work in the insurance profession, I am sometimes called a loss control consultant or a risk control engineer. I personally I prefer to be called a Riskologist, as it is my job to study a client?s risk exposures and loss experience ? and provide the cure to prevent or minimize reoccurrences.

To understand the science of safety and risk management, you have to understand the human psychology. People with risk-taking behavior are responsible for many of the accidents and claims we see. Accidents and risk takers are synonymous, and employers today spend countless hours encouraging, educating and sometimes disciplining employees to stress that such behavior is detrimental to their safety and health.

The bigger question to examine though is why do employees take such risks, even when they can see the danger.

Everybody reading this is a risk-taker. We all take chances every single day of our lives. Many of you took a chance driving to work today and were rewarded with a positive outcome. If you were having a car accident on average two times a week on your way to work, I bet that you would eventually stop driving to work, would you not?

?

The underlying cause for risk-taking behavior can be traced to the positive rewards being sought. Maybe it is for a promotion, or for financial gain.

?

Early in my career I investigated a partial hand amputation accident. I learned that an employee working on a skeleton crew late at night at a machine shop in Indiana had removed guards and had jerry-rigged his workstation. I learned he was using a 2?4 board to depress both of the palm control buttons allowing him to free up an extra hand so he could retrieve a part sooner through the cycle. This made his production numbers look great.

Many investigators would have stopped there, but I still didn?t have the reasons for his risk-taking, so I kept drilling down and learned that he worked in a piece mill position (getting paid by the number of pieces he produced). He was being rewarded
for his excessive production.

He was willing to bypass the safeguards to make more money, and since there was insufficient oversight on third shift, he could operate at this unsafe pace.

?

Many times if I have enough loss data I can drill down to determine where and why a loss is occurring. With a little detective work I can sometimes even see accidents following a certain supervisor. Once I uncover this loss trend, I will suggest that maybe it isn?t entirely that supervisor?s fault, and encourage management to see what may be motivating him/her to overlook safety. Maybe the bonus-structure emphasizes more production at the expense of a zero-accident culture. Maybe it?s an infrastructural change or the new organization structure that has negatively affected the safety performance.

Far too often employers are willing to reward entrepreneurial spirit, which rewards risk-taking behavior. But risk-taking is inherently failure prone, otherwise it would be called sure-thing-taking.

?

Without risk-taking, we?d all still believe the world was flat, and many of the modern wonders and comforts of the world today would not exist. There wouldn?t have been a Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Henry Ford or even a McDonald?s restaurant.

?

As I now look back to that ?Stand By Me? moment on that dark cold railroad bridge I now realized that both friends have been risk-takers their entire lives. So the take-away here is that every business owner or manager today still needs to unleash the right balance of entrepreneurial spirit and risk-taking behavior within their employees, as it is these attributes that are necessary to grow a business. But they must instill that risk-taking behavior with an effective and safety and health program that promote a strong zero-accident culture.
